Do you ever listen to the Waterlogging term? What is it? If not, then I will tell you about this in this post. Today the maintenance of the soil is very crucial for the sake of good productivity from the crops. It is very important for us to enhance productivity. So, there is a need to overcome this issue of Waterlogging. I am here to discuss how we can solve this day-by-day increasing problem. So, let’s start
What do you mean by Waterlogging?
When the soil gets saturated with water in a particular region of the soil, it will cause the phenomenon which is called waterlogging.
Cause of Waterlogging
There are some causes that occur in soil due to waterlogging:
- Poor Drainage
- Excess of Rainfall
The Logging of the Water has some problems in our Environment like soil displacement, restricts air entry into the soil pores, and also causes damage to the growth of the soil vegetation. Water logging causes the depletion of the soil oxygen and the concentration of soil carbon dioxide and also increases the level of ethylene which is much more dangerous for the crops and causes a decrease in the yield of the crops.
Softpik Explains Waterlogging
The soil which is poorly drained and also compacted may become very easily and quickly waterlogged. When the soil reaches this stage then it becomes anaerobic causing adverse effects on the health of the plants and the other crops.
Types of Water Logging
There are different types of water Logging that occur at the other locations due to varied conditions:
Riverine Flood Waterlogging: It occurs when heavy rainwater and river flow to the nearby soil and seep down into that soil.
Oceanic Waterlogging: It occurs due to the bringing of ocean water due to hurricanes and also due to tsunamis
Seasonal Waterlogging: The water runoff from rain accumulates at the lower soils and also in depressions causing waterlogging
Perennial Waterlogging: It occurs when the rainwater enters the swamps and wetland areas causes to seep down into the nearby land.
Signs of Waterlogging
Waterlogging remains unnoticed until the water comes to the surface of the earth. By this point, the roots of the plants may damage.
Knowing the signs of waterlogging can help us to identify its treatment before it’s too late. The symptoms may be Water Stress due to lake of water and the growth of the plant may be too short. They include:
- Blue-black ROOTS
- Peeling bark
- Drying the shoots
- Stunted Plant Growth
- A Sour Rotting Smell
Effects on Soil | Waterlogging
When the displacement of the oxygen occurs due to the water the growth of the plant stop. The excess amount of water can change the PH of the soil and makes it more acidic. This is also affecting the level of nitrogen present in our soils.
Waterlogging also causes the cooling in the soil, as a result, the soil microorganisms cannot perform their activities properly as a result the production of the crops decreases.
Finally, waterlogged soil is an ideal breeding place for pests, mosquitoes, and for slugs.
Various Ways to Prevent Waterlogging
Control the Loss of Water
Augmenting Outflow and Preventing Inflows
Disposing of Rainwater
Preventing the Loss of Water
Not Using Alkaline Water
Raise the Bed
Install proper Drainage System
Hope so, you have read this topic carefully, Now I am telling you that Waterlogging is a severe problem that can cause severe damage to the productivity of the country. So, there is a need to overcome this problem. I have discussed the amazing facts about logging in this post so read them carefully and ask your question about the solutions to Waterlogging. Thanks!
